  • Warning: There are spoilers here related to Season 2 and its recently-released episodes.

While the entire opening wasn't changed for Season 2, there are plenty of changes in it that I wanted to discuss:

    Edits

    • In general, the credits are different, changed with new staff members (like the directors) and the typeface different. In particular, the thick black shading behind the letters is gone, or at least the shading is much more subdued.
    • The background of the scene where Marinette trips on a cat, gets picked up by Adrien, and gets pushed out of the way by Chloé has a new background and new lighting. The background is a different view of the school stair entrance, and the time of day appears to be later, or at least there are warmer lights being used.
    • The shot of Tikki waving has a different background, no longer having Notre-Dome and instead having a red background with the earrings. This is from (or based on) the unused version of S1's theme song.
    • In relation to the last point, Tikki immediately flies into Marinette's earrings instead of a few seconds of Marinette's heading showing but before Tikki starts heading her way.
    • The shot that pan upwards with the group of characters until it fades to Hawk Moth's lair is entirely different, not featuring any future characters who will be akumatized and showcasing Marinette and Adrien with their S1 classmates (no Lila or new students). Some characters show up more than once too, notably Marinette and Alya.
    • The background on the shot of Cat Noir missing a kiss to Ladybug and the identities reversing is different. It's now very similar but not exactly like the unused version.
    • Instead of four kwamis flying alongisde Ladybug and Cat Noir, we have seven kwamis flying upward, creations blocks of color where the silhouettes of the their current/future holders show. (the four new ones are concept art stills, so they must've not had models ready in time).
    • All seven kwamis, basically just streams of light, fly into the Miraculous jewelry box before it closes.
    • The ending still has minor tweaks, including a different sky, a different landscape around the tower, different lighting, and slightly moved placement of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
S2 Theme Turtle and Fox Sticker
Here are some interesting things I noticed from these changes.

First, there are a few hints sprinkled in about the future confirmed Miraculous holders. In the pan with multiple photos of Miss Bustier's class, first, Alya appears to have fox ears in the bottom shot with the class' girl students. On the highest center picture with Alya, Nino, and the duo, there is a turtle sticker and a fox sticker.

Next, I found the bottom shot with the girls interesting, where all the girls have face stickers. Marinette has a panda (which is adorable) and Alya is a fox (which is foreshadowing), but all the other girls have oddly notable stickers. Rose has a pig nose and ears, Alix has rabbit ears and mouth, and Mylène has mouse/rat ears. I can't tell as easily with Juleka, but she appears to have a tiger tail, tiger ears, and a sharp tooth, along with the text "GRRR" on her. Why is this notable to me? It's due to the fact that all of these animals are in relation to the Chinese zodiac animals, and we had some huge news released in relation to that. I have conflicted thoughts on this, but I'll save those outside this main post.

S2 Theme Hero Silhouette Lineup Example
Finally, I find the layout of the seven Miraculous holders' silhouettes interesting. Obviously, it's based off a rainbow, but it's interesting that Ladybug, Rena Rouge, Queen Bee, and Carapace are next to each other while Le Paon and Hawk Moth. However, why is Cat Noir on the end with the supervillains instead of next to Ladybug? After all, because he's represented in gray, he could've easily gone on the other side, or to reflect their relationship, go next to Ladybug and split her and the other superheroes apart. I think this placement helps reflect Cat Noir and Hawk Moth's relationship and connection. Also, while this is full-on speculation, it could be foreshadowing a time where Cat Noir teams up with Hawk Moth for a while.

I'd love to hear what anyone thinks on these changes, including whether you like them or dislike them, what you think about the potential teasers, and if you think something more should've been added.

    • We’re there any hint on Le Peon’s Identity?

Her silhouette is the only obvious tease for her in the theme song, but that silhouette could suggest something later down the line.

    • So maybe Rose get the Pig Miraculous, Juleka's the tiger, Mylène the rat and Alix the rabbit. Is every girl in this class getting a miraculous or what? I understand Alix with the rabbit, she's fast. And Alix and Nath are on the same pic, so maybe they'll become a couple? It's not for nothing that the others are paired together, Ivan and Mylène are together. Kim is still hung up on Chloé, so I'll doubt he'd go with Alix.

    • If they're going this route, I'd rather see someone good get the Butterfly and the whole class become heroic Akuma as opposed to them all getting Miraculouses. Either way, I think they're pushing for too many heroes too fast. And if anybody else in Bustier's class are getting Miraculouses, it would likely be happening after "The Day of Heroes".

Also, "ROSE+JULEKA" is written on the pair's respective photo.

    • Honestly, I hope it's more of a tease to the kwamis than actual foreshadowing to more Miraculous holders.

Let's suppose that this is the case; would it make sense? If we minused the confirmed five students from the total from Season 1 and added in Lila, Luka, and Kagami, that would equal twelve people. From what we know based on the theme song:

      • Rat — Mylène would get the rat based on the theme song, having rat/mouse ears. The pink eyes remind me of Mylène's use of pink in her outfit.
      • Tiger — Juleka would get the tiger based on the theme song, having a tiger tail, tiger ears, a sharp tiger-like tooth, and "GRRR." She has similar colors to it too.
      • Rabbit — Alix would get the rabbit based on the theme song, having a rabbit mouth and rabbit ears. (I would've expected the snake with her, but okay.)
      • Pig — Rose would get the pig based on the theme song, having a pig snout and pig ears. She's also very pink.

My only strong guess outside of these would be Ivan as the ox. The rat and the ox are the most associated pair of Chinese zodiac animals, as the ox carried the rat and helped it make it to the finish line first. Considering Mylène's relationship with Ivan, I would guess Ivan would get the Ox Miraculous. Also, he and the ox kwami have similar expressions, and bones and horns are kind of similar.

However, even if all of the Chinese zodiac Miraculouses were given to the twelve students (give or take which ones as Lila, Luka, and Kagami aren't really a part of the class as far as we know yet), I really don't want them to all have Miraculouses. Unless the rest of the class is sent to the four corners of the earth to bring heroics and justice, all of them getting Miraculouses is too much. Maybe all of them getting Miraculouses temporarily for a huge battle could be awesome, but then there's the lingering disappointment of them not getting to keep them. As someone who gets attached to new awesome superheroes, I don't think I'd like that well.

So, I'm hoping it was meant as a tease for the future Miraculouses without being a tease of who gets which some of those Miraculouses. As always, if a story with this happening is well-written, I'm totally open to it happening. In this case, though, I have a hard time imagining how this would world in the grand scheme of things. To make so many more heroes for Paris, that would require a lot of strong writing to make it feel reasonable and not pointless or intented or merchandise.

I had The this headcanon years ago about the Quantic Universe haveing a Darkseid (Or Thanos in this case.) But with all the Spider-Man inspiration going around the I think the classmates becomeing heroes may there idea of the spider verse. (Storyline)

    • Hm, I thought Juleka's was a wolf, but now I can see she has a tiger tail. Yippee. I really hate the implications of Miraculouses for everyone in the class, or most of them. I can't imagine why they'd give them to just the girls, so I really hope it's just a red herring meant to troll people like us who look too much into things. Plus, we've not seen anything of a Rabbit Kwami.

I wonder... In the entire montage of what looks like purikura shots, Chloe, Nath, Sabrina, Ivan, and Kim only appear once. We were told that we'd have clues as to Le Paon's identity but I've watched this thing over and over and I can't find a single thing. The only possible person it can be assuming there actually is a hint is Le Paon is Sabrina, because she's the only girl who isn't associated with a single animal. Which I hope isn't true, her voice is very grating.

On an irrelevant note, the animation looks prettier, and poor, poor Adrien's sad face when Ladybug dodges his kiss makes me sad and chuckle at the same time. Which I genuinely doubt he intended to give her because he's too much of a gentleman to kiss a girl he knows doesn't want to be kissed.

One thing I thought was kinda interesting was that in one of them, Ladybug is sporting black cat ears, tail, and whiskers.

I had briefly mentioned this earlier, but now that I've got a picture from the opening to go with it... you think ZAG's actually making their pairing official now? I mean, the staff does seem to know that Rose and Juleka are fan-favorites as both normal cast members and as Akuma (which is likely why their Akuma-selves are both coming back in the Day of Heroes special), but this seems to imply more strongly than ever that their friendship may not just be platonic.

It's hard to tell, I think. When people are writing, + is often just used in place of an ampersand (&) because ampersands are not easy to draw, and Rose's name looks handwritten. To me, Rose and Juleka being a pairing would feel like they'd just been tacked on just to have a lesbian pairing on the show. I've never really noticed them treat each other in a way that can be interpreted as romantic- Rose is a very affectionate girl who looks out for everyone, and Juleka is shy and quiet, but Rose is her best friend so they talk, but when they talk, there's no difference between how Juleka talks to Rose and how she talks to Marinette.

    • Good job of spotting, Tansyflower. However, might I suggest that you change the title of the topic since it's inaccurate. You didn't actually discuss the theme song at all.

A better descriptive title for this article is "Changes to the Main Title sequence in Season 2" or "Changes to the Opening Credits sequence in Season 2" since the article is dealing with only the changes in the visual, not the audio (song) elements of the sequence. When I clicked on it, I thought that maybe the theme song had been rewritten somewhat (as indeed, it may have been... I didn't really pay that close attention), but that's not really the topic of discussion here.

    • I don't know about the Rose + Juleika thing. It's pretty cropped as posted, so I don't know if a less-cropped version might change my opinion. It just seems like pretty slim evidence to hang a theory on. I got the impression they were more like BFF's. Plus I wonder if they'd really do it in a kids show for international distribution. Trying to think of any other kids' shows with overtly gay characters, but I come up blank.

I'm surprised by how little Rena Rouge looks like Alya, at least to me. Maybe when I see her in the episode she'll look different to me.

Steven Universe and Legend of Korra both have LGBT+ characters in them. And to my understanding, so does Dr McStuffins. So it's not unheard of.

Yeah, it does seem like overkill. Or a concerted push for a new wave of merchandising. They can only make so many figures of Ladybug and Cat Noir, so to expand the merchandising they need other colorful characters. Unfortunately the setup of the show doesn't really lend itself to making villain figures, because the villains (except Hawk Moth) are all one-and-done. Harder to sell villain figures if they're only ever seen in one episode, and then never again. Hope I'm just imagining the worst.

    • My major concern here from an in-universe story POV is that the first season had an interesting, delicate balance of elements that seems like it could easily be thrown out of whack by an influx of new superheroes. If there are three or four or five times as many superheroes existing in Paris, doesn't that require a similar multiplication of the number of supervillains threatening the safety of the city? Or just the same amount, but now they all need to be four or five times as dangerous to require multiple heroes to team up to defeat them. It also makes me wonder if all of the Miraculous holders are concentrated in Paris, then who's protecting China, Russia, North and South America, and so on? Seems a little weird if all of the supervillains in the world are concentrated in just Paris, or even just such a high percentage of them. Previous episodes seemed to indicate that historically, Miraculous heroes were spread throughout the globe, appearing in places like Egypt and China or Japan. But beyond those concerns, how much screen time is being devoted to these new heroes, that has to be subtracted from the two main stars of the show? I feel nervous about the possibility that they might ruin it, because I care less about the new characters (or new identities of existing characters, as the case may be) than I do about Ladybug and Cat Noir, and Marinette and Adrien.

    • Someone on FB noticed some in the character pan shot that was clever and a well played thing by Zag. Nino is holding his hand up but it is in front of Julaka's face continuing that gag.
