My kwami? I know! You're what gives superheroes their superpowers, right?

Alya Césaire, to Trixx in "Sapotis"

Kwamis are the deuteragonistic faction of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. They are divine, spirit-like beings who embody "abstract" concepts. They give certain powers to people with Miraculouses, transforming them into animal-themed superpowered beings.

They are cousins of Renlings, other spirit-like beings who embody human values.

History

Kwamis Traveling the Universe

Kwamis flying through the universe.

Kwamis are divine beings that are formed whenever a new abstract idea or emotion comes into existence in the universe, such as creation, love, beauty, and mathematics. The very first Kwami ever to come into existence is Tikki, the Kwami of Creation, who came into existence upon the creation of the universe.

The concept of creation not only created the Quantic Universe, it also created a near infinite number of other universes alongside it, with each universe having its own set of kwamis, that is to say that the kwamis exist in all the universes simultaneously. The kwamis have the knowledge and memories of all their counterparts from the other universes, though they don't usually bring up this topic with mortals, as there isn't enough time in such a short lifespan to explain even the tiniest bit about it.

All of the Kwamis know each other and journeyed across the universe for eons.[3] During their travels, they found their way to Earth and at some point discovered their magical powers, born from the abstract concepts that they respectively embody, with Plagg using his powers to cause the extinction of the dinosaurs. That's when the kwamis realized, even though their powers were great, they were too strong and unfocused, leading to great damage. During their ancient past, the kwamis witnessed the rise of humanity and with it, from 5 to 7 million years ago, the birth of their "cousins" the Renlings.

However, the Kwamis were spirit-like, and thus couldn't be perceived by regular, tangible lifeforms, such as humans, and were therefore unable to interact with them. Despite that, they had a deep yearning to learn more about humans by observing them.

Until one day, five thousand years ago, a Chinese mage figured out how to create special magical jewels, the Miraculouses. These jewels allowed the Kwamis to manifest in physical form, finally allowing them to communicate with mortal lifeforms, though the physical form can only be manifested when a Kwamis respective Miraculous is in the possession of an owner. In return for the privilege of having the ability to be perceived by mortals, the Kwamis were able to grant superpowers to their Miraculous owners. Through said owners they had discovered that their powers are far more manageable.

From that point on, Kwamis helped the wearers of their Miraculouses transform into heroes and achieve good all around the world. There were instances where they became stuck with villainous owners and were forced to help them with their diabolical schemes due to being bound to their Miraculous owner's every command, such as Nooroo and Duusu currently in the series. Some of them have made long-lasting and meaningful bonds of friendship with their owners and to commemorate that special bond, they'd give their owner a jewel, known as a Kwagatama.

A long time ago (long enough for some Kwamis to forget), a magical spell was cast upon them. They are physically incapable of speaking their owners' names to each other or any Miraculous owners other than their own. However, if another Miraculous owner already knows their owner's identity, then the Kwami can speak their owner's name freely. The spell also prevents kwamis from speaking the name of the guardians of their Miraculouses.

On occasion, incidents where an active kwami would get separated from their owners or find them in trouble would occur, and often used their powers to protect them, but only as a last resort.

In "Sandboy", it is revealed that active Kwamis collect items from the outside world and bring them inside the Miracle Box to give as presents to inactive Kwamis for entertainment.[4]

Sometimes on occasions, through unknown means or without the need for an owner a kwami can find their way out of the Miracle Box.

Just as Miraculous holders were taught about the powers of the jewels, so were the kwamis, such as the Miraculous potions, that allowed them and their owners to change into their elemental forms. However, even though they were curious about how their powers could be modified, they were forbidden by the guardians to know as a precaution in case if they ever fell into evil hands.

Over time, the kwamis also became aware that they could unify their powers as well as the danger that came when one holder fused too many jewels together, as seen in "Miracle Queen", when Stompp, Roaar and the others refused to share their activation commands after seeing Chloe's rude and selfish behavior. They also knew that Chloe could've severely hurt herself, so they refused for her own safety. They also were aware of the Guardian's Code and sometimes, like their owners, shared meaningful bonds with the guardian's of their boxes.

In rare incidents not all kwamis know the identity of the guardian that has ownership of the Miracle Box their Miraculous came from such as Nooroo and Duusu not knowing much about Master Fu before they were separated.

Sometimes, depending on certain situations or emergencies, Kwamis would often return to the home cities, towns, countries of their previous owners, but come under the ownership of new holders, like in the case with Tikki.

Even though, kwamis can be renounced by their owners in "Transmission", it's revealed that they can do their own form of "renouncing". As with Tikki's and Plagg's case, if the task of being a wielder is too great for them or least if the holder doesn't meet the kwamis expectations they can convince their owners to surrender their jewels without saying the renounce command. Afterwards the kwamis begin their search for new owners under their own judgement if a guardian doesn't or can't intervene or has their permission.

Main Timeline

From then on, the kwamis were all safe with their Miraculouses inside the Miracle Boxes at the Guardian's Temple until the Order fell 172 years ago because of a mistake made by Fu, a young apprentice guardian at the time. While undergoing a trial of watching over a Miracle Box for 24 hours without eating, he used Duusu's power in an attempt to create a small Sentimonster to go to the kitchen to get him some food, but he accidentally manifested a ravenous Sentimonster that devoured the monks and most of the Miraculouses and the kwamis as well. Except for the last remaining Miracle Box which was carried to safety by Master Fu. However during Fu's escape Nooroo and Duusu were separated, buried in the snow near the temple's ruins meanwhile the remaining seventeen kwamis hid with Master Fu to parts unknown.

Up until sometime ago Wayzz was activated and becomes Master Fu's companion as they travelled the world together. Then, before World War II they were in France where their existence was known to Master Fu's friend and eventual lover Marianne Lenoir however even with the Order gone the kwamis and their powers were still being hunted. During WWII, the kwamis and their master were being pursued by the Nazis in order to escape them they fled with him to London and after the war was finished they made their way back to Paris.

Meanwhile unknown to them, 15 years ago, before the rise of Ladybug and Cat Noir both Nooroo and Duusu were found on a previous trip overseas by the Agrestes and Nathalie. In "Representation", due to the Agrestes nor the Graham de Vanily couples not being able to bear their own children, Emilie and Colt used Duusu's power to create Adrien and Félix respectively, but due to Duusu's state of his damaged Miraculous in doing so, they grew sick over time and were eventually left in a condition where they fell into an eternal slumber. Afterwards, Gabriel forbid the use of it and hid it away. Desperate to fix his mistake, he began using Nooroo's for evil to obtain Tikki and Plagg in order to gain access to their absolute power, reawakening the legend once more. Soon a new generation of holders began again this time with the kwamis being paired in the hands of teenagers of Paris, France.

In "Feast", after the titular supervillain was defeated by Ladybug and Cat Noir, the former's Miraculous Ladybug is able to bring back the guardians' temple, along with all the monks, Miraculous and kwamis that were eaten. In "Miracle Queen", Ladybug became the kwamis new guardian when Master Fu gives up his role.

During French-American Friendship Week in "Miraculous New York", Ladybug and Cat Noir discover one of the lost kwami Liiri of the Eagle Miraculous, in the Gilbert du Motier exhibit in the New-York history museum.

As of "Strikeback", all of the kwamis from the Chinese Miracle Box except for Tikki, Plagg and Duusu have fallen into the hands of Gabriel Agreste due to him trading his nephew Félix the Peacock Miraculous for all the others in the Chinese Miracle Box and Gabriel's wedding ring.

In "Evolution", thanks to Monarch's greed, the heroes managed to save Fluff and her Miraculous. In "Destruction", Monarch melted the remaining Miraculouses except the Butterfly Miraculous into rings with the ability to gives his akumatized villains the Miraculous superpowers of the Miraculouses without needing to give them the actual jewelry while the kwamis were put in cages.

In "The Kwamis' Choice", after Tikki and Plagg's choice to free their owners from the responsibilities their Miraculouses put on them, Monarch discovers the identities of the new holders of the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, Alya and Zoé, and steals their Miraculouses from them while they're in their civilian identities. But thanks to the efforts of the two kwamis and the Resistance, Marinette and Adrien retrieved them, allowing Ladybug and Cat Noir to return.

Despite Monarch finding at least one user of for almost all the kwamis he can grant except Sass, deeming his power too dangerous to grant to his akumatized supervillains, he still couldn't defeat the heroes. In "Intuition", he used Sass himself, but found out the hard way that he couldn't make it work due to Ladybug's adaptability and Cat Noir's unpredictability. To make matters worse for Monarch, his repeated usage of Second Chance worsened his Cataclysm induced injury, forcing him to never make use of the Snake Miraculous again.

From "Re-creation", during the scuffle Nooroo and his Miraculous was free but lost again as Gabriel was making his wish he relinquished his remaining Miraculouses to Ladybug and she reforged the jewels to their original forms and the Kwamis are freed from the Kwami Cage and Gabriel's control for good, since the Kwami cage was destroyed by Marinette. Then, the kwamis were returned to all of the inactive members making them like herself and Cat Noir full time members along with their newest addition Argos. Unknown to them that Nooroo was captured by Cerise Bianca who swam in the Agreste Mansion crypt and plans to use it for an unknown reason to destroy our heroes.

Reversed Universe

At some point, The Supreme got hold of all Miraculous in existence and has used them to dominate the world. No one knows about the existence of the Miraculous and the kwamis, except for those the Supreme entrusts a Miraculous with. Since the Supreme is showed as being a villainous entity, all kwamis may have been enslaved by him, forced to help the Supreme and his followers. It is unknown if this applies to all kwamis, but it is known for sure that at least Tikki and Plagg had been given seals on their mouths that not only prevents them from speaking, but also prevents anyone from summoning Gimmi and using the Absolute Power.

At some point in time, Gabriel Agreste, a fashion designer, joined the Supreme in order to steal two Miraculous so he could get his greatest wish, only to lose his wife in the proccess. Despite the loss, Gabriel decided to fight the Supreme, using the Butterfly Miraculous to transform into Betterfly and use its power to bring hope to his world. To counter that, the Supreme gave the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, who became Shadybug and Claw Noir, so they could recover the stolen Miraculous from Betterfly.

Appearance

Dearest Family (483)

Kwami size reference.

Generally, Kwamis are small, being around 10 centimeters (4 inches) in height, with large heads, big eyes, tails in different sizes, and tiny bodies.[2] They have arms and legs, and though they lack fingers and toes, Kwamis are still able to grab things. The animal theme that they display is reflected in their Miraculous; for example, Plagg is black with green eyes and has cat-like ears and a cat-like tail. Fittingly, his Miraculous is the Cat Miraculous.

After consuming certain potions made from the Miraculous spellbook, their appearances will change. If the aqua mode potion is used, the kwami will gain fins and a fishtail. In "ice mode", the Kwamis gain crystals on their bodies.

In "Re-creation", with Tikki and Plagg it's revealed that Kwamis have one other form under the command "Kwami Reveal Yourself", they assume their original forms becoming humanoid giants with multiple arms.

Abilities

Kwamis are divine beings of great cosmic power. They are immortal beings that have existed since the birth of the universe billions of years ago.

Kwamis each have a unique superpower, each power corresponding to the abstract concept that the Kwami embodies. However, the Kwamis powers are far too strong and uncontrolled. When a Kwami uses their superpower without a Miraculous holder to channel and focus it, it results in some kind of catastrophe, potentially resulting in the destruction of whole cities and the extinction of entire species. And yet, on occasion they can also have some degree of control when using their powers.

Also mentioned in "Style Queen", kwamis don't need a physical form to use their powers as Plagg used his Cataclysm to make the dinosaurs go extinct, long before the jewels were made, it means that kwamis are capable of using their powers in their spirit forms or since they started their lives as cosmic and/or spirit like beings, Kwamis are born with their powers.

Due to their bodies being of spiritual nature, they are able to levitate and freely fly through physical space, even up in the sky at great heights, as seen in "Weredad". Kwamis are also able phase through physical matter, making it impossible to capture them. As seen in "Miracle Queen", and given the fact that they once flew across the vacuum of space, Kwamis do not require air, even if they're underwater.

Despite the Miraculouses granting them physical form, Kwamis don't show up on cameras, photos, videos, or screens as seen in "Kwamibuster" and "Truth", and they can't be seen or perceived by artificial intelligence, such as robots and androids, like Aeon. However, as seen in "Optigami", Kwamis can been seen through pictures and videos from technology if the footage is provided by magical means, such as if a Sentimonster transmits its vision to the technology containing it's Amok. Kwamis can have their voices be heard through a phones, as seen in "Confirmation", they can't have their voice be recorded through technology.

Even though they are small, Kwamis appear to have a human level of strength. They have displayed the ability to hold and lift things that are larger and/or heavier than themselves. Despite said size, there seems to be no limit to the amount of food they can eat; in "Dearest Family", Tikki was able to eat multiple galettes and still not get full.

When Kwamis are told to "Shut up, be quiet or silence!" they're mouths are sealed by the voice or a snap of their fingers they can speak again with a snap or command.

They can also perform a ritual for their Miraculous owners where they create a Kwagatama inside their bodies from the hairs of their past and current owners. It allows their current holder to summon and communicate with spirits of the Miraculous holders of the past. They present the charm to their current bearer for a special occasion, such as a birthday.

Sandboy (221)

The Kwamis trying to establish communication.

Kwamis can communicate with each other from afar on a Kwami's "cycle" (the Kwami equivalent of a birthday) if they gather in the Miracle Box at a specific time and all sing together. The more Kwamis there are, the stronger the connection is, and the more likely it is to work. They can also completely dispel the connection if they need to. If the Kwami being contacted is powering a Miraculous at the time, the other Kwamis will contact the Miraculous' wearer instead.

Destruction (52)

Kwamis burp bubbles by a magic spell that prevents them from saying their owners' real names to other holders or other Kwamis.

Kwamis are under a magic spell that prevents them from saying their Miraculous owners' real names to each other. If they try, bubbles will come out of their mouths. They also cannot say the real names of their holders to other Miraculous holders, as seen in "Sandboy", "Reflekdoll", and "Destruction". However, as seen in "The Collector", this rule does not seem to apply if the holder already knows the other holders identity, as Wayzz was able to say Master Fu's name to Marinette. More than one Kwami having the same holder also seems to be an exception; after Marinette became the Guardian, the kwamis were able to say her name to each other, as seen in "Furious Fu", "Sole Crusher", and "Kuro Neko".

Yet it seems in "Reflekdoll" and "Oblivio", they can say the real names of their owners as long as they're not in close proximity to another individual and despite other kwamis knowing the identities of other holders, the spell seems to work regardless of any condition, but they can say any version of their holder's hero name just fine. It's also unknown if the guardians placed the spell on the kwamis starting with their first owners or after an incident that led to a Miraculous holder's identity being discovered leading to troubling results. In "Destruction", kwamis can say the real names of Miraculous holders who have renounced their jewel, however, even if the Miraculous is stolen, the holder whom the miraculous was stolen from still counts as a holder, as long as they never actually renounced the Miraculous.

As seen by Plagg in "The Puppeteer 2" and Tikki in "Captain Hardrock", Kwamis aren't only able to just inhabit Miraculouses; they can also possess or inhabit other objects like a wax figurine head and locks.

Due to them and their Miraculouses have been used by people across the world throughout history, the Kwamis are able to automatically speak and understand any human language, which is essential due to them not knowing who their next Miraculous owners might be. As seen by Tikki in "Miraculous Shanghai" as she could fluently speak Chinese, meaning that the phrases used to transform and the use of their powers can be said in any language.

In "Volpina", "Reflekdoll" and "Ephemeral", the kwamis are able to find their way home sometimes returning to their chosen owners or their guardian if they become lost or separated. According to Marinette, since the kwamis don't know what an address is they use their other senses to find their way home.

In ""Re-creation", it's shown that kwamis can reveal their real form if their owners asks them and even combine into one new entity. However, it's unknown if that's an unique trait for Tikki and Plagg, who are the embodiment of the first concepts to exist in the universe and so can obtain the Absolute Power.

In "Miraculous Paris", it's revealed that all kwamis can live simultaneously in all the universes and even be aware of the experiences their counterparts have.

Miraculous Transformation

LB Transformation (6)

Tikki helping Marinette transform.

When a specific command is given, a Kwami will be pulled into their respective Miraculous, even if they do not want to. When a Miraculous owner transforms, the Kwami transforms into pure energy to charge the Miraculous and give the user their power, thus, resulting in the Kwami disappearing into the Miraculous.[5] While the Kwami inhabits their Miraculous, the person wearing it will transform into an animal-themed superhero, the animal theme corresponding to the animal that the Kwami resembles.

The transformed person gains greatly enhanced physical abilities and become nearly invulnerable. They also acquire an Omni-purpose tool and the ability to use a more controlled version of the unique superpower that their Kwami possesses.

Antibug 345

Tikki eating a cookie to regain energy to transform Marinette again.

The Miraculous transformation can last indefinitely, but if the holder is underage, once the special superpower is used, they are left with only five minutes until they detransform back to their normal form and the Kwami leaves the Miraculous, completely out of energy.[6] As seen in "Anansi", just summoning the power can drain the Kwami's energy, even if the power is not used on anything. To regain their strength for another transformation, the Kwami needs to refuel by eating food. Any food will work, though some have a preference for specific foods. Plagg is an example, as all he ever seems to eat is Camembert cheese and is barely shown eating anything else. In "Timetagger", just staying transformed takes a toll on them if the transformation is held for a very long period of time.

When the Miraculous is worn by an adult owner, the Kwami can maintain the transformation, even after the special power is used, and the power can be used multiple times. This is because when a kwami is paired with an adult holder, they can feed off their energy, sustaining themselves for far longer, also meaning they don't have to be fed as much.

They are aware of the actions of the people who use their Miraculous when transformed, but they cannot communicate with their owners during that time.[7] At the same time, the extent of the events that they can be aware of when their Miraculous is used is uncertain: after the battle with Stoneheart, Tikki and Plagg were unaware that Ladybug forgot to capture the Akuma.

In "Emotion", it's revealed that they don't only have an awareness to the owners that use their miraculouses but also to the actions of others around their holders. As Tikki was aware of Felix's caring but aggressive methods, his powers, the situation and knowing he needed to see the real outcome of his desires which ended up in Tikki not giving her owner an object.

If a holder wears the Miraculouses of two Kwamis' or more, their unification capabilities are activated creating a hybrid Miraculous holder and yet it's unknown if constantly fusing two Miraculouses or more will have lingering or harmful effects for the kwamis.

Weaknesses

Princess Fragrance 017

Tikki getting sick from Marinette being transformed in the rain.

Despite their god-like nature, Kwamis can get sick, as seen in "Princess Fragrance" when Tikki became sick after helping Marinette defeat a villain in the pouring rain or snow. A Guardian can assist in their recovery and heal them. It's unknown if a Kwami can only get sick while inside a Miraculous or to what extent this could harm them or affect their wielders and their powers. However, when a Kwami is not fed properly leading to their powers becoming weak and ineffective it's likely if they transform when sick, then their owner's powers will be too.

According to "Ladybug & Cat Noir" and "Timebreaker", Kwamis are capable of sensing the power of other kwamis and even their own powers when active under certain circumstances like time travel. However, it seems that their range can be limited or they can't sense the powers of another Kwami when they're not active, as Wayzz was unable to sense Duusu when he was activated prior to the months before Nooroo was. As well as sense the aura of other beings, including humans, done by Liiri in "Miraculous New York".

As abstract entities, they have been around since before the creation of the Miraculouses, meaning even if their Miraculous is destroyed or erased from the timeline, they will return to their natural state, in which case they cannot be perceived by mortal senses under normal circumstances; even though they do not cease to exist.[8] If a Kwami's connected jewel is destroyed first, then they go back to their original forms but it's unknown if the same holds true when or if the kwami is destroyed first.

When Kwamis are powering their owners, they have some level of resistance to an Akumatized villain's attacks, as seen in "Dark Cupid". However, if their owner is attacked by an Akumatized villain's powers and detransform afterward, the effects will transfer to the Kwami, as seen in "Oblivio", "Miraculer", and "Psycomedian".

Even though their intangibility makes them impossible to catch it does have their limits. The only known exception to this rule is magical means, such as the Miraculouses, or Kwamibuster's vacuum. In "Mr. Pigeon 72", it is implied that even though kwamis can make themselves intangible, they can't do so for objects, but also in "Sentibubbler" not even for the Miraculouses they are connected to, as noted when Tikki said "The earrings won't go through the bubble". Which is fully confirmed in "Conformation", as Plagg flew back to Paris with his miraculous in tow upon finding his guardian's hiding place in the Agreste mansion he phased right through the cabinet but the ring didn't come with him.

In "Truth", it's revealed that a damaged Miraculous is dangerous for a kwami as well but to a lesser extent in the case with Duusu. Along with his personality change, he described it with his mind being trapped in chaos and living in a nightmare. But whether if it's the same for each kwami is unknown varying between their personalities and how their connected jewels get damaged or if there are more side effects. Since kwamis feed off the energy of their adult wielders it's also likely that they feed off more when their connected Miraculous is damaged to sustain themselves which would explain the cases with Nathalie and Emilie. Or if it's possible that the kwamis can still use their version of their powers when the Miraculouses are damaged.

In "Dearest Family", it is revealed that when a Kwami gets a strong craving for a certain type of food, it can cause them to mad with hunger. The Kwami will do whatever it takes to get as much of the food as possible, they even go as far as to show themselves in front of humans and use their special superpowers, despite the potential disaster. To make matters worse, if the Miraculous holder transforms while their Kwami is in a food-hungry state, the extreme craving will pass on to the holder.

In "Evolution", it's revealed that the kwamis power depends on the energy they possess, before or during transformations. In case their energy starts to diminish, through the use of a single Miraculous or a unification, it is reflected in the performance of the powers given to their holders. With young holders, the single use of a Miraculous' power (with the exception of the Rabbit Miraculous), causes the kwamis to lose their energy, preventing the holder from using their power and causing the transformation to have a time limit before being undone. With adult holders, an excessive use of the powers ends up making them weaker. When under unification, for both young and adult holders, the combined use of the powers places a great strain on the kwamis and holder's energy, draining and debilitating both much faster. For that reason, it's imperative that the kwamis are well fed between each transformation and that the holder doesn't do constant combinations of too many Miraculous at one time.

According to Sass, it also presents a great danger to them with him warning Monarch "If you destroy us then you destroy yourself" heavily implying that they could lose their physical forms that way.

In "Destruction", even though, the spell prevents the kwamis from saying their holder or guardian's real names to others, but it doesn't prevents the kwamis from telling where the holders or guardians live, if the kwami knows where their owner's location/home, their homing instinct can be used by anyone with dark intentions.

It's revealed that kwamis can actually be directly affected by the powers of other kwamis, as Monarch was able to use Venom, Pollen's power, on both Plagg and Tikki. Not just that, but they remained affected by the power even after returning to their respective Miraculous and so after Monarch took them and then put them on, summoning the two kwamis who were still immobilized.

In "Miraculous Paris", is showed that Tikki and Plagg from Shadybug and Claw Noir's universe have seals put on them by the Supreme that prevent them from talking and also prevents anyone from summon Gimmi and use the Absolute Power. Just like their owners due to their powers being activated with a simple trigger word if the kwamis can't talk then they can't even active their powers to defend themselves.

Power-ups

The Miraculous spellbook contains recipes for potions that can alter a kwami's appearance and form, either by drinking the potion directly or consuming something edible that contains the potion. After the Kwami has ingested a potion, the kwami's Miraculous wielder will get new abilities and appearances in their superhero form, depending on the potion the kwami consumed. These extra powers last for only a single transformation.

Known Potions

Syren (526)

Potions that give Miraculous users special powers: Orange, Red, Purple (Space), Blue (Ice), Yellow, Green (Aqua), Pink

The known power-ups are:

  • Aqua - The kwami's legs are replaced with a fishtail, and their hands are replaced with flippers. It allows the kwami to grant underwater abilities to their holder. The potion's color is green.
  • Ice - The kwami grows three ice shards somewhere on its body. In some cases some part of the body will be slightly altered, such as Tikki's spot which turns into a hexagon. It allows the kwami to grant ice-related powers to their holder. The potion's color is blue.
  • Space - It is unknown what a kwami looks like in this form. It allows the kwami to grant space-related powers to their holder. The potion's color is purple.

The Kwami of Destruction.

Inhabits the wearer's Ring for them to transform into a cat-themed superhero.

Trivia

  • The concept of the Kwamis was created by Bandai.[9] A Kwami is a "quantic (small) kami."[10] In Japanese, kami (神) often refers to a god or certain kinds of spirits.
  • Wilfried Pain noted in a Twitter response that Kwamis are "some kind of god" and don't exactly have genders.[11] He also mentioned that the kwamis are supposed to look very cute.[12]
    • While they don't have genders, kwamis would address each other with either masculine ("he/him"), feminine ("she/her"), or neutral ("they/them") pronouns. In "Sandboy", Plagg referred to his fellow kwamis as "brothers and sisters".
      • The kwamis' official pronouns are the ones they have in the French dub, as the franchise originated from France. However, some dubs give some of the kwamis different vocal ranges which leads to them having different pronouns. For example, Duusu has a masculine voice and uses "he/him" in the French dub, but has a feminine voice and uses "she/her" in the English dub.
      • Interestingly, there are rare cases where a dub would change voice actors for some kwamis later during the show's run. This resulted in some kwamis having their preferred pronouns changed later in the show. For example, in the English dub, Roaar was originally given a masculine voice, thus being given "he/him" pronouns in "Sandboy". But Roaar now has a feminine voice following "Miracle Queen", thus being given "she/her" pronouns.
        • Another interesting case is some kwami's alternate variant(s) within the multiverse. In the English dub, Nooroo has a masculine voice and uses "he/him" pronouns in the Quantic Universe. But the kwami has an alternate variant who has a feminine voice and uses "she/her" pronouns in the Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie universe.
    • In the English dub, individual kwamis are commonly addressed as either "he/him" or "she/her". However, Ezra Weisz, the voice director, once revealed on TikTok that he prefers addressing the individual kwamis as "they/them".[13]
      • Daizzi is the first kwami to be addressed as "they/them" in the English dub, which is in "Guiltrip".
  • According to Thomas Astruc during a Miraculous panel at Ludicomix 2018, some kwamis being inspired by the Chinese zodiac signs is because he wants the world to get to know the elements of Chinese culture.[14][15]
  • According to Thomas Astruc, the name of every kwami has to be a short name with double letters in it.[16] All kwamis have at least one set of double letters in their name (Tikki, Trixx, Mullo,...). The only known kwami which has more than one set of double letters in its name is Nooroo, with two.
  • Interestingly, each of the concepts the kwamis represent all end with the suffix -ion. The only exceptions to this is Liiri, who is from the Native American Miracle Box.
  • Kwamis are like Aladdin's genie, having to obey their holder's desires.[17][18] They aren't genies themselves; however, genies do exist in-universe, according to Plagg in "Ladybug & Cat Noir".
  • According to Jeremy Zag, Season 2 would include an episode revealing the origins of the kwamis.[19]
    • The New York Comic Con 2016 panel additionally noted that there would be Miraculous Secrets webisodes that focus on the kwamis, notably Tikki and Plagg (revealed as "Tikki" and "Plagg"), and that there may be more than one episode in new seasons that centers on them.[20] "Sandboy" is one such episode.
  • The official Miraculous Ladybug Twitter account noted that while more kwamis would be seen in Season 2, it wouldn't be all of them.[21]
    • Duusu ended up being introduced in Season 3's "Reflekdoll".
  • According to Tikki in "Sandboy", a kwami's cycle, or birthday, is equivalent to several hundred human years.
  • Even though some kwamis don't have noses, they seem to have a sense of smell; for example, in "Stormy Weather" Plagg said he could "smell Camembert in his sleep."
    • In "Oblivio", he was seen sniffing Adrien's shirt, smelling the Camembert within.
  • According to Tikki in "Félix", Kwamis live forever, meaning that they are immortal.
  • In "Feast", since the sentimonster's destruction returned the Guardians and the destroyed Miraculous, it means that not only are there more Miraculouses but, also, more Kwamis.
  • In "Miraculous Shanghai", it is revealed that Kwamis are slightly color blind, since Tikki sees things in a pink tint. However, it is not known if this is the case for all Kwamis, or if so, whether every Kwami sees things in pink, or in a different color.
  • It is revealed in "Truth" that Kwamis squeak when their heads are touched.
  • In "Gang of Secrets", it is revealed that Kwamis don't fall in love.
    • Although in "Sandboy", Plagg flirts with Tikki like how Cat Noir regularly does with Ladybug.
      • Otherwise, this seems understandable as Kwamis are immortal and accordingly there is no need for them to fall in love with their own kind.
        • It seems only when they're active kwamis get to experience loving and caring bonds with the owners they receive.
  • Although kwamis can't speak to their owners directly when transformed, it's seems in "Lies", they can do so through their owner's Miraculous tools.
  • Even though the kwamis have known each other for a great amount of time, not even they know or possibly remember everything about each other's powers.
  • As of "Miraculous New York", "Queen Banana", "Hack-San" and the many past holders, there are many potential reasons as to why the kwamis had to wait a very long time for an owner:
    • What, who, where, when is the threat in the world and how long it will last.
    • What Miraculous and person is best suited to handle the job.
    • So that no previous or (if any) disgraced superheroes harbor any jealousy or grudges towards new holders when they are chosen, due to the emotional attachments they have towards the superpowers that used to belong to them.
      • As well as due to harboring emotional attachments to the people that use them.
      • So that their successors don't feel overshadowed by the holders that came before them.
    • Just like people, the kwamis may also need time to heal from the abuse or misuse from evil owners. As well as when it comes to losing or saying goodbye owners they were proud to have.
    • To know the meaning of companionship with others creatures.
  • According to Thomas Astruc, the form the kwamis have now isn't their only one, which means that before the animals they represent appeared, they may have looked different.[22]
    • It's also unknown how the kwamis gained the animal forms they were based on. However due to them having the ability to transform their wielders through the jewels, it's likely before that they used their transformation powers to turn themselves into the forms they have now.
    • Usually when changing appearances especially into animal ones the kwamis could have:
      • As they became fascinated with humans, the kwamis could've been fascinated with the animals that roamed the earth themselves and even though they couldn't be seen it's likely they wanted to blend in.
      • After that they observed the animals they picked but since most of the current animal forms they have now didn't exist at the time they arrived to earth. It's possible that some of them started with the animal ancestors of their current animal forms then over the millions of years as animals evolved the kwamis used their powers to modify their appearances while there were others that had to wait before they could transform.
  • Despite their age, the kwamis seem to possess a childlike innocence, but they still seem to be very wise.
  • Furious Fu (33)

    Kwamis playing Kwami-Kwa-Who!

Kwamis have their own variant of Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, called Kwami-Kwa-Who! It goes: "Kwami-kweeny-koomy-who, the special chosen one is you!".
  • All kwamis cannot be seen on cameras, videos, screens or by robots, much like how vampires have no reflection in mirrors.
    • However, unlike vampires, Kwamis do have reflections in mirrors, as seen in "Bubbler" and "Truth".
    • The only way for this rule to be bent is through the use of magic. When Mayura created a sentimonster (Optigami) that could record anything it spied into her tablet, she was able to capture kwamis in video. Applying that idea, it's possible that robots, when powered by a magical source, can perceive kwamis as well.
  • Even though kwamis had owners throughout the centuries they are not pets despite them looking like animals most people would own as pets, on a farm, they'd find in a zoo, sanctuary, reverse park or the wild.
  • With their small size and cuteness, kwamis can easily look like toys or plushies as seen in "Princess Fragrance", "Miraculous Shanghai", "Furious Fu" and "Simpleman".
