Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (also named Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir,[2] Miraculous,[3] or Miraculous Ladybug) is a French CGI animated series. It is a co-production between ZAG Animation, Method Animation, Disney Channel EMEA, Toei Animation, SAMG Animation, SK Broadband, PGS Entertainment and AB International Distribution.[4] It premiered around the world starting in fall of 2015.[5] The show was formerly licensed by Nickelodeon from 2015 to 2016, before the rights transferred to the morning kids block "KidsClick" from 2017 to 2019 until the blocks closure. During this time as well, Netflix picked up the SVOD rights to the first three seasons of the show. Disney Channel is the current rights holder in the United States, having exclusive streaming and cable television rights to the entire show and its specials.
The first season, second season, third season and fourth season each have 26 half-hour episodes, while the fifth season has 27 half-hour episodes (with a special non-canon episode). A web series and some additional web exclusive content also released after its first season. On April 2021, via Licensing Russia, sixth and seventh season have also been confirmed.[6] On July 29, 2022, via Licensing Russia, an eighth season has been confirmed.[7]
Synopsis
For an episode list, see Episode guide.
- Two high-school students, Marinette and Adrien, are chosen to become Paris’ superheroes: Ladybug and Cat Noir. They each have a Miraculous, a jewel linked to their magical creatures (Kwamis) that give them powers. Their mission is to keep Hawk Moth – who wants to steal their Miraculouses – from wreaking havoc on the town by creating increasingly dangerous supervillains – all while living their high school lives and keeping their identities secret.[8]

Production
The original concept for Ladybug was conceived by Thomas Astruc around 2005.[9][10] One day, after meeting a young woman who was wearing a ladybug shirt and working with her, Thomas played around with the idea of a ladybug, soon creating a sticky note with the design of Ladybug. Thinking that the character worked well, Thomas began to develop this character with new drawings (like as seen with fake comic book covers called The Mini Menace Ladybug) and constructed the universe around her, inspired by comic universes like Marvel. He continued to develop his idea until he met Jeremy Zag, a producer at Zagtoon, who allowed Thomas to do what he thought best with it.[11]
There were many changes that Ladybug went through during development. The series was originally meant to be for older audiences like teens and young adults, having political stories and a darker tone. However, as explained by writing director Sébastien Thibaudeau, "Some elements hindered its perception and no one really knew why",[11] so the crew worked on making it lighter for a younger audience. Toei Animation helped to create an animated promotional video showing footage of what the show would be like in order to showcase the show as an anime, but eventually, it was decided to make the series in CGI. There was also a point in time where producers encouraged making Ladybug and Cat Noir a part of a superhero team, but it didn't help sell the show, and the superhero team idea was dropped because of it.[12]
Astruc created the show by drawing ideas and concepts from Franco-Belgian comics, American comics, and Japanese animation. He found inspiration for Ladybug from Amélie Poulain, Spider-Man, and Sailor Moon. He and his team wanted to create a show that reflected the romance and beauty of France, and they aimed for it to have superheroes that appeal to young girls while not falling into the clichés of female characters.[11]

Trivia
- Every episode of seasons 1-4 is named after the titular supervillain (or sentimonster, starting with Season 3) with the exception of two episodes:
- Ladybug & Cat Noir (Origins - Part 1) and Mayura (Heroes' Day - Part 2) are named after Miraculous holders.
- Coincidentally, both of these episodes are part of two-episode specials.
- Despite the Punisher Trio being the featured akumatized villains in "Félix", the episode title actually foreshadows the revelation that Félix Fathom is secretly a sentimonster. His identity as a sentimonster, however, isn't revealed until the fifth season in the episode "Representation".
- Ladybug & Cat Noir (Origins - Part 1) and Mayura (Heroes' Day - Part 2) are named after Miraculous holders.
- Every episode of Season 5 is named after a Miraculous power being centered around the episode, with the exception of:
- "Reunion", "Deflagration", "Revelation", "Confrontation", "Collusion", "Revolution", "Representation" and "Conformation".
- It's unknown if "Re-creation (The Final Day - Part 2)" refers to the power of the Ladybug Miraculous.
- "Reunion", "Deflagration", "Revelation", "Confrontation", "Collusion", "Revolution", "Representation" and "Conformation".
- It takes one entire year to finish an episode, and many episodes are usually being worked on at the same time.[26]
- In South Korea, the show is simply titled Ladybug.[27]
- The EBS version of the logo also varies from the original one and is based off a conceptual logo for the series.[28]
- As of September 2020, Miraculous has been broadcast in over 160 countries.[29]
- Despite being a primarily French animated series, the show was lip-synced to English audio.[30]
- After only 10 weeks on air in the United States, Miraculous entered the top 10 animated series for all time slots and networks.[33]
- The show also managed to track around three for the top 10 children's television programs.[34]
- Internationally, Miraculous was also met with impressive numbers, becoming the #1 kids' show on both TF1 in France and EBS1 in South Korea.[35] Eventually, it became a child favorite in France, ranking high among the most popular children's shows there.[36] In Brazil, the show even managed to be the top series in the nation.[37]
- During the series's Netflix debut in February 2017, it ranked #4 in popularity among children's shows, managing to drive a 10% share.[38]
- According to series director Wilfried Pain, all episodes of Season 2, Season 3, and the Miraculous Ladybug OVA "were written at the same time... [and] also written one by one."[39]
- Thomas Astruc is planning for the series to have six seasons or more.[40]
- As of July 2023, five seasons have been fully aired, two is currently being produced, and three more have been confirmed, with the next season currently slotted to premiere in 2024.
- As revealed by the official Miraculous Ladybug Tumblr blog, in later seasons, some characters will get expanded wardrobes, including clothes, accessories, and more.[41]
- Marinette, Alya, Adrien and Chloé have their own official Instagram accounts: @marinettedesigned, @alya.ladyblogger, @adrienagrestebrand and @theofficialchloebourgeois.[42]
- All seasons have 26 aired episodes, although the fifth season has 27 episodes (with the extra episode focusing on plastic pollution and not being part of the season's storyline).
- Starting in Season 1, the time difference between the character's timeline and when the show premiered is about a year apart.
- Each season is equivalent to 2 months. Seasons 1 - 5 take place between 2015 - 2016, although Seasons 3, 4 and 5 were released after 2016, and Season 5 legitimately lasted 4 months. It would be possible that Seasons 6 - 8 would take place between 2016 - 2017, although Season 6 would be released in 2024.
- Although they are the main protagonists of the show, starting in Season 2, there were episodes that featured Marinette and Adrien in minor roles. The episodes with Adrien as a minor character being "Style Queen, "Truth", "Gang of Secrets", "Mr. Pigeon 72", "Furious Fu", "Sole Crusher", "Crocoduel", "Optigami", "Sentibubbler", "Qilin", Dearest Family", "Penalteam", "Destruction", "Intuition", "Adoration", "Emotion", "Pretension", "Conformation, and "Re-creation".
